In an Age of Speed, Crafting a Piece of Slow Fashion
Ten years ago, I was a buyer scouring the world for fabrics. I traveled all over the Shaoxing Light Textile City and even visited Lake Como in Italy. The more I saw, the more anxious I felt—the streets were flooded with “trendy items,” like fast food off an assembly line, forgotten the moment you’re done with them. Do we really need that many clothes? Or are we simply missing a “battle garment” that can stay with us a little longer?
The turning point came on a rainy day. I was visiting a veteran denim artisan in Japan who was weaving fabric on an old-fashioned shuttle loom. It was extremely noisy and inefficient, producing only a few dozen meters a day. I asked him why he didn’t switch to a high-speed machine. He pointed to the fabric and said, “Look at this edge—it has a natural, slubby texture. Fabric woven on fast machines is like copy paper: smooth but boring. My fabric has a life of its own; as you wear it, it will bear your unique imprint.”
In that moment, I understood. Clothing should be an extension of the body, a reflection of one’s character.
And so this brand was born. We start by being meticulous about something as small as a button—replacing plastic ones with mother-of-pearl ones, just for that subtle, warm luster; we use long-staple cotton instead of ordinary cotton, so the collar retains its shape even after countless washes; we even preserve certain “handcrafted” processes to ensure each garment has its own subtle variations, just as no two leaves in the world are exactly alike.
We don’t chase trends, nor do we peddle anxiety. We believe in one simple truth: when you wear a fine garment, the wind will know it, and the path you’ve walked will know it too.
May our clothes be worthy of every day of your life.
